Christmas Caroling I went Christmas caroling only once but I loved it. We got a variety of neighbors together who wanted to do it. I made up song sheets with the words for everyone. We even practiced. I played piano so we practiced at my house. I think the practicing was even more fun than the caroling. There was so much love and laughter in my house. Neighbors that had been friends became family. There was a tangible joy in the air. When the night finally came we recruited my brother. He was...

My Personal Christmas Tree The first thing you should know is that I’m a little odd. I’m sure if you’re reading this you already know that. My family had our Christmas tree in front of the window in the living room. My mom always did the lights, my brother and I got to help untangle and test them. For you younger readers, back in the day, if one light bulb on the strand didn’t work the whole lot didn’t work. That meant that you’d plug them in and if it didn’t light up you had to...

Every Christmas morning, even as adults, I’d open gifts with my mother and brother. I decided to spice it up. Where I worked we collected toys to distribute to children in need. Anything that was considered inappropriate to distribute was set up in our lounge and sold to employees. That money was used to buy replacement toys. My friends and I nicknamed it The Inappropriate Toy Store. One year inspiration struck. I bought a handful of things. I also bought a roll of wrapping paper that I only...

The Nativity Scene Growing up Catholic, Advent, the weeks leading up to Christmas, is a big deal. We have an advent wreath and you light candles and say prayers every night. We’d go to church where the focus is on preparing ourselves for the gift of Jesus. My family even had a birthday cake for Jesus to make sure we focused on him as much as Santa and gifts. My house also had a large nativity scene that sat on our piano. I got to set it up every year. It felt like the most important task. I...

As I was contemplating what to share with you as we begin the “Ber” months, I found myself reflecting on my childhood. I believe the true magic of Christmas as an adult is often the feelings you hold onto from childhood. That made me decide that I would share some of my best childhood memories and family traditions. We always spent Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. My grandmother and I would spend a couple weeks baking cookies and pies for the party. It would be the whole family...

As I finished my Christmas cards i began thinking (I know that’s a scary thought). Why don’t many people send cards anymore? The only answer I could come up with was social media. Friends used to send photo cards of theirchildren, or put photos in cards, and some even still wrote letters. I wonder if people figure we see their children online and we’re connected all year so it isn’t necessary. I don’t agree. Mostpeople don’t share a lot of personal things. There’s tons of...

Well, I’m continuing to work on my Christmas cards, slowly. That’s why I give myself lots of time so there’s no rush and no pressure. I’ve also started my Christmas list. Sounds easy but I have to do mine and my mother’s. I start with a list of everyone I need to buy for from me and from her. Then I write some ideas about what each person likes. My next step, which I did a few of today, is to put some possible gifts on my shopping list so I can come back to them later. This is my...
