100% Wolf (2020)

Rated: PG

Genres: Animation, Family, Fantasy

Starring: Jane Lynch

Synopsis: Freddy Lupin is the heir to a proud family line of werewolves.  Positive he’ll become the most fearsome werewolf ever, Freddy is in for a shock when his first “warfing” goes awry, turning him into a ferocious-poodle.

Review:  This was really good.  I was interested and engaged in the story the whole time.  If you’re an adult who doesn’t particularly enjoy animated films, this may not be for you.  This is a good family film but might be a little scary for very young ones.  There were some nods to Lion King that I thought were done well but were too similar.  I did enjoy the overall message of believing in yourself.

Scoring: 3

The Addams Family
Rated: PG-13
Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy
Starring: Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Dan Hedaya, and Christina Ricci
Synopsis: For 25 years uncle Fester has been missing. An evil doctor finds out and introduces a fake Fester in an attempt to get the Adams Family's money. The youngest daughter has some doubts as to the sincerity of the new uncle Fester. The fake uncle adapts very well to the strange family. Can the doctor carry out her evil plans and take over the Adams Family's fortune?
Review:  A fun movie version of the TV show. We get to know the family and all their eccentricities along with many colorful characters. The story is original and entertaining. A movie I don’t mind seeing over and over again.
Scoring: 4

The Addams Family (2019)

Rated: PG

Genres: Animation, Comedy, Fantasy

Starring: Tituss Burgess, Snoop Dogg, Oscar Isaac, Allison Janney, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, Chloe Grace Moretz, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Charlize Theron

Synopsis: The eccentrically macabre family moves to a bland suburb where Wednesday Addams' friendship with the daughter of a hostile and conformist local reality show host exacerbates conflict between the families.

Review: There were times, especially at the beginning, that I thought might be too dark for the youngest viewers, hence the PG rating.  It’s got lots of funny moments for children and adults along with the antics you expect from the family.  This has a message of being one’s own self and accepting others for their differences that is more overt than other Addams Family movies.  It’s a great message for children and a great way to start a conversation as a family.

Scoring: 4

The Addams Family 2 (2021)

Rated: PG

Starring: Charlize Theron and Bette Midler

Synopsis: The Addams get tangled up in more wacky adventures and find themselves involved in hilarious run-ins with all sorts of unsuspecting characters

Review: I believe children will enjoy this and parents won’t mind it. That being said, it didn’t have the typical Addam’s Family feel. It was too light, and the music was too pop. Worth watching once.

Scoring: 2

Addams Family Values

Rated: PG-13

Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy

Starring: Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Joan Cusack, Dan Hedaya, and Christina Ricci

Synopsis: The Addams Family try to rescue their beloved uncle Fester from his gold-digging new love, a black widow named Debbie.

Review: In a fun sequel to the first movie, we get to see the contrast between the girliest girl and an Addams. The movie splits into two equally funny stories when we see the kids at camp with “normal” children and Fester falling for the nanny. This movie may be more outrageous than the first but it’s another I love to rewatch.

Scoring: 4

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)

Rated: G

Genres: Animation, Musical

Starring: Bing Crosby and Basil Rathbone

Synopsis: This is two stories, “The Wind in the Willow” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”

Review: I found “The Wind in the Willow” to be so-so.  It’s old school Disney but it was a little silly for me.  Children will probably still enjoy it.  I loved “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”  It was probably helped by the narration and singing by Bing Crosby, one of my favorite voices.  The second is scarier for younger children.

Scoring: 3

All Hallows’ Eve (2016)

Rated: NR

Genres: Family, Fantasy

Starring: Lexi Giovagnoli, Ashley Argota, and John DeLuca

Synopsis: As Eve celebrates her 18th birthday on Halloween night, she discovers she’s a witch and accidentally summons an old relative who wants to enslave the town.

Review: This is a cute movie.  I’d say it’s geared toward preteens but anyone could watch.  It’s a little blah at points and I had to force myself to pay attention more than I’d like but a younger viewer may feel differently.

Scoring: 2

Annabelle (2014)

Reviewed by: michelle_floflo1 on Instagram

Rated: R

Genres: Horror, Thriller

Starring: Alfre Woodard, Annabelle Wallis, Ward Horton

Synopsis: A couple expecting their first child is tormented by a demonic spirit in a doll named Annabelle. The couple must find a way to stop the evil from taking over the couple and their child.

Review: Great movie! Had me at the edge of my seat with plenty of jumps and scares. Annabelle is a prequel to The Conjuring. I had high expectations, and they were met!  I watch this movie every Halloween! I do not recommend for kids.

Scoring: 4

Annabelle Hooper and the Ghosts of Nantucket (2016)

Rated Y-7

Starring: Bailee Madison

Synopsis: Vacationing on historic Nantucket Island, a teenage mystery writer and her friends must outwit two scheming thieves to solve the secret behind a legendary ghost story.

Review: The movie started out slow. When you’re half an hour in and still feel like you’re waiting for the story to start that’s too long. The acting was okay and the location was beautiful. I’d say tweens might like it but that’s about it.

Scoring: 2

Arthur And The Haunted Tree House (2017)

Rated: G

Genres: Animation, Family, Fantasy

Synopsis: While trick-or-treating, Francine meets an elderly woman with a mysterious past; Blinky finds himself at Mr. Ratburn’s amazing haunted house; and Arthur, Buster, and Ladonna fear the tree house may be haunted.

Review: Age-appropriate Halloween scary for young children told in a way adults may still enjoy making it a good family viewing.  Unlike the other Arthur movie I saw, this one isn’t focused on one story but rather several shorter stories woven together.

Scoring: 3

A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting (2020)

Rated: TV-PG

Genres: Adventure, Comedy, Family, Fantasy

Starring: Tamara Smart, Oona Laurence, and Tom Felton

Synopsis: A babysitter embarks on a mission to save a child who’s been abducted by monsters.

Review: A great movie for preteens showing girls as powerful and brave.  It is an interesting look at those monsters in our nightmares.  It even has some good humor.  It’s probably best for preteens but could be good family viewing.

Scoring: 2

The Batman vs. Dracula (2005)

Rated: NR

Genres: Action, Animation, Fantasy

Synopsis: Batman faces off against the original creature of the night, Count Dracula, who has been unintentionally resurrected by the Penguin.

Review: I’m more a fan of the campy Batman than the darker gothic versions, like this one.  Even so, I was getting into the story and then it just felt like it was dragging.  I was actually bored.  If this is your genre, you should love this.  If not, save your time.  Also, it’s not rate but it’s definitely not for young children.

Scoring: 2

Beetlejuice
Rated: PG
Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy
Starring: Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, and Winona Ryder
Synopsis: Adam and Barbara are a normal couple...who happen to be dead. They have given their precious time to decorate their house and make it their own, but unfortunately a family is moving in, and not quietly. Adam and Barbara try to scare them out, but end up becoming the main attraction to the money making family. They call upon Beetlejuice to help, but Beetlejuice has more in mind than just helping.
Review:  This is a classic for a good reason. It’s silly, fun, and full of many eccentric characters. The best twist is that the most normal characters are the ghosts in the house.
Scoring: 4

The Black Cauldron (1985)

Rated: PG

Genres: Adventure, Fantasy

Synopsis: A young boy and a group of misfit friends embark on a quest to find a dark magic item of ultimate power before a diabolical tyrant can.

Review: I was so bored watching this.  You’d think fighting evil and a pig who can tell the future would be enough to garner a little attention, if not enthusiasm.  It’s just like watching paint dry.  Disney dropped the ball on this one.

Scoring: 1

Blackbeard’s Ghost (1968)

Rated: G

Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy

Starring: Peter Ustinov

Synopsis: On the Carolina coast, Godolphin College’s new track coach lodges at Blackbeard’s Inn, run by the Daughters of the Buccaneers, who claim to be descendants of the notorious pirate, and who risk losing their hotel to the local mobster.

Review: There were a few moments that were entertaining but overall, it was a yawn.  There were too many times where the story lagged.  If you like old-school Disney, give it a shot.

Scoring: 2

Blippi And Friends: Halloween Special (2020)

Rated: G

Genres: Animation, Fantasy

Synopsis: Enjoy this special Moonbug Halloween-themed compilation with some of our favorite characters such as Blippi, Morphle, ARPO The robot, and Gecko’s Garage.  In this educational yet entertaining video for kids, your kids will follow Blippi as he visits the pumpkin playground, Mila and Morphle as they go trick or treating, Gecko as he makes Halloween ice cream, and lots more exciting cartoons.

Review: A very cute and educational Halloween special for young viewers.  I would say probably 5 and under are the target audience.  There are songs and lots of fun.  Most adults won’t care for it.

Scoring: 3

Blippi’s Spooky Spells Halloween (2014)

Rated: G

Genres: Kids

Starring: Clayton Grimm

Synopsis: Halloween is in the air and Blippi is in the spooky spirit after finding an old, leather-bound book of “Spooky Spells.”  Excited to make the most of the holiday, Blippi has decked out a Halloween campfire for the best Halloween ever.

Review: Like all Blippi shows, this is definitely for young children, probably under 5.  It’s educational and fun.  It lends itself to a good family interactive experience as there’s lots to talk about.

Scoring: 4

Boo!  A Madea Halloween

Rated: PG-13

Genres: Comedy, Drama, Horror

Starring: Tyler Perry

Synopsis: Madea winds up in the middle of mayhem when she spends a haunted Halloween fending off killers, paranormal poltergeists, ghosts, ghouls and zombies while keeping a watchful eye on a group of misbehaving teens.

Review:  This is a typical Madea movie.  If you like Madea, you’ll love this.  You’ve got all the funny lines and characters mixed with Halloween antics.  It even has the life lessons you’d expect.  It’s laugh out loud funny.

Scoring: 4

Boo 2!  A Madea Halloween

Rated: PG-13

Genres: Comedy, Drama, Horror

Starring: Tyler Perry

Synopsis: Madea, Bam, and Hattie venture to a haunted campground and the group must run for their lives when monsters, goblins, and the boogeyman are unleashed.

Review:  All the fun, characters, and silliness of the first Madea Halloween but with some more scare thrown in.  I couldn’t stop laughing.

Scoring: 4

The Boy (2016)

Reviewed by: michelle_floflo_1 on Instagram

Rated: PG-13

Genres: Horror, Thriller

Starring: Lauren Cohan, Rupert Evans

Synopsis: A young American woman take a nanny job in England for an 8-year-old boy. When she arrives, she is shocked to find out that the child is actually a doll. She is asked to care for the doll as if it were a real child and also to follow strict rules. When she starts to break the rules, a number of unexplainable and disturbing events begin to happen leading her to think that the doll is alive.

Review: Overall a good movie. It starts off a bit slow but eventually grabbed my attention. To be honest, I’m surprised she stayed because with all of things that were happening, I would have left. I think she stuck around because she wanted answers.

Scoring: 4

The Boy Who Cried Werewolf (2010)

Rated: TV-PG

Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy

Starring: Victoria Justice, Chase Ellison, Anna Galvin, Brooke Shields, and Brooke D’Orsay

Synopsis: When high school geek Jordan becomes a werewolf after moving to Romania, she must elude her own brother who seeks to slay her.

Review: A little cheesy but a typical coming of age/monster movie.  Brooke Shields is amazing here.  This is more a preteen girl style movie.  They will enjoy how Jordan goes from self-conscious to confident.  Families could enjoy it.

Scoring: 2

Bride of Boogedy (1987)

Rated: PG

Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy

Starring: Mimi Kennedy and Richard Masur

Synopsis: A family with a great love for practical jokes is haunted by the family ghost, Mr. Boogedy.

Review: This is a sequel to “Mr. Boogedy”.  The best way I can think to describe it is as ghostbusters for kids.  It’s a little silly but that keeps it from being overly scary.  Some of the best scenes are when the father is possessed by Mr. Boogedy.  Made for kids but adults may enjoy it.

Scoring: 3

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1992)

Rated: PG-13

Genres: Action, Comedy, Fantasy

Starring: Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens, and Luke Perry

Synopsis: Flighty teenage girl Buffy Summers learns that she is her generation's destined battler of vampires.

Review: I never watched the TV series, so I don’t know how the movie compares to it. It’s very campy and corny. It doesn’t take itself seriously. If you’re looking for a scary edge of your seat movie, this isn’t it. If you want to laugh with vampires thrown in, this is for you.

Scoring: 2

Can Of Worms (1999)

Rated: PG

Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy

Starring: Michael Shulman and Erika Christensen

Synopsis: A teen is visited by aliens after he broadcasts a message into space.

Review: The movie is silly and corny with average to amateur special effects.  I’m not sure how children will like it.  I think most adults will agree with me and find it boring and a waste of time.

Scoring: 1

Casper
Rated: PG
Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy
Starring: Bill Pullman, Christina Ricci, Kathy Moriarity, and Eric Idle
Synopsis: A paranormal expert and his daughter bunk in an abandoned house populated by three mischievous ghosts and one friendly one.
Review:  A fun movie for the whole family. Kids will love special effects like the ghosts eating and the food going through them. A good message about kindness and acceptance.
Scoring: 3

Casper and Wendy (1962)

Rated: G

Genres: Animation, Comedy

Synopsis: While witches and goblins are off to scare the living, Casper the friendly ghost spends Halloween night looking for a friend with a pulse.

Review: This is a collection of animation shorts. The animation is, as obvious by the release date, primitive compared to what kids are used to today. It’s fun and Casper is so sweet, as always, and it would be fun family viewing.

Scoring: 4

The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About Halloween (2016)

Rated: G

Genres: Animated, Fantasy, Musical

Starring: Martin Short

Synopsis: The Cat in the Hat takes Nick and Sally on a Halloween ride filled with howlers and shockers and scary fandangles, big laughs and music and fun from all angles.  Their fright-filled adventure takes them deep into the Oooky-makooky Closet where Nick and Sally discover the best costumes ever.

Review: This is a fun way for children to explore Halloween.  It’s exactly as advertised.  I don’t think adults will enjoy it as much as many animated specials but it’s still enjoyable.  The Seuss character and language is entertaining and this would be a good family movie.

Clue (1985)

Rated: PG

Genres: Comedy, Mystery

Starring: Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Eileen Brennan, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, Lesley Ann Warren, Colleen Camp, and Howard Hesseman

Synopsis: Six guests are anonymously invited to a strange mansion for dinner, but after their host is killed, they must cooperate with the staff to identify the murderer as the bodies pile up.

Review: Based on the board game, this movie, with it’s unbelievably perfect and amazing cast, doesn’t disappoint.  It’s very funny and has you wondering how it will end right up to the last moment.  Definitely worth a watch.

Scoring: 5

Coco (2017)

Rated: PG

Genres: Animation, Family, Fantasy, Musical

Starring: Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt, and Gael Garcia Bernal

Synopsis: Aspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer.

Review: This was an interesting movie.  Thankfully I speak enough Spanish since they don’t put the words in English, which may make this annoying or difficult for non-Spanish speakers.  It’s a nice way to learn about The Day of the Dead if you aren’t familiar and an introduction to another culture.

Scoring: 4

CoComelon Halloween Songs (2020)

Rated: G

Genres: Animation, Musical

Synopsis: It’s Halloween season! Join JJ, his family and friends on a CoComelon Halloween journey.

Review:  I’ve never seen any CoComelon shows before, so this is new to me. I thought it was adorable. It’s definitely for younger children but I wouldn’t mind watching with them so it could be family fun.

Scoring: 3

The Conjuring (2013)

Reviewed by: michelle_floflo_1on Instagram

Rated: R

Genre: Horror, Thriller

Starring: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Joey King

Synopsis: A family that has moved into a new home must face an unspeakable horror! The home and land is cursed by a woman who vowed her life to Satan as she killed herself and cursed anyone who lived in her home or on her land. This family is being tormented by the evil and they must call upon the Warren’s, paranormal investigators to save their family.

Review: Definitely the scariest movie I have ever seen! From to start to finish, you will be on the edge of your seat as you watch the evil presence unfold and wreak terror on the unsuspecting family. I didn’t sleep for 2 days after I watched this movie. A must see!!! I do not recommend for kids.

Scoring: 5

Coraline

Rated: PG

Genres: Animation, Drama, Fantasy

Starring: Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher

Synopsis: An adventurous 11-year-old girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets.

Review: This movie was creepy and I feel that may be an understatement.  It’s not one I’d watch again but I don’t particularly care for creepy and weird.  If you liked The Nightmare Before Christmas, Frankenweenie, and similar movies, I believe you’ll like it.

Scoring: 2

Corpse Bride
Rated: PG
Starring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, and Tracy Ullman
Synopsis: When a shy groom practices his wedding vows in the inadvertent presence of a deceased young woman, she rises from the grave assuming he has married her.
Review:  I know I say this for every one of his movies but, Tim Burton. If you’re not a fan, this isn’t the movie for you. I found it to be a sweet love story with some original story elements. I seems implausible that a movie about a ghost in love would make sense but somehow it works.
Scoring: 3

Cruella (2021)

Rated: PG-13

Genres: Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Synopsis: Estella is a young and clever grifter who's determined to make a name for herself in the fashion world. She soon meets a pair of thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they build a life for themselves on the streets of London. However, when Estella befriends fashion legend Baroness von Hellman, she embraces her wicked side to become the raucous and revenge-bent Cruella.

Review: A very interesting take on Cruella as a character. I was surprised to feel so understanding and sympathetic. It’s an interesting take on how her character developed. Please note the rating. It’s a little dark for young children.

Scoring: 4

Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest (2013)

Rated: NR

Genres: Animation, Fantasy

Starring: Frank Welker

Synopsis: George jumps in leaves, picks a pumpkin, and does other fun Halloween traditions.

Review: This is very cute.  I wish they’d left the songs out but other than that it’s adorable.  I enjoyed it.

Scoring: 3

The Curse of Bridge Hollow

Rated: TV-14

Genres: Comedy, Family

Starring: Marlon Wayans, Kelly Rowland, Priah Ferguson

Synopsis: A teenage girl, who accidentally releases an ancient and mischievous spirit on Halloween which causes decorations to come alive and wreak havoc, must team up with the last person she'd want to in order to save their town - her father.

Review: This movie had funny moments and some enjoyable scenes. Mostly it was too much. Too much repetition, too much devil and hell, and too many bad effects, and so on. It doesn’t have the fun feel of movies like Hocus Pocus. It’s much darker. Why is the mayor the only one with an accent and why does it sound so absurdly cartoonish?  Definitely not for younger children.

Scoring: 2

Dark Shadows (2012)

Rated: PG-13

Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy

Starring: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jonny Lee Miller, and Ava Green

Synopsis: An imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection.

Review: This is most definitely a Tim Burton movie.  If you enjoy his sort of twisted humor, you will like this.  If you don’t, you may not.  It suffers from an identity crisis.  It can’t decide if it’s about a family, a romance, or a comedy.  It switches back and forth.  I enjoyed it and wouldn’t mind watching again but I tend to like Burton’s work.

Scoring: 3

Dave Of The Dead (2020)

Rated: NR

Genres: Animation, Fantasy

Synopsis: Zombie Dave has worked the fly-thru window at Spacejack’s Intergalactic fast-food restaurant for ten years, and he’s seen it all until Count Dracula stiffs Spacejack’s on a bill, leaving Dave on the hook for eight space bucks.

Review: The best way I can describe this is as a Halloween character adaptation of Bill and Ted for preschoolers.  The animation isn’t the best and it spends a lot of time talking about Dave’s devotion to his job.  I doubt any older child through adult would really enjoy it.

Scoring:

Death Becomes Her (1992)

Rated: PG-13

Genres: Comedy, Fantasy

Starring: Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Bruce Willis

Synopsis: When a woman learns of an immortality treatment, she sees it as a way to outdo her long-time rival.

Review: I think this movie is quite funny.  It’s not at the level you’d expect with Streep, Hawn, and Willis starring.  It’s tongue-in-cheek and more than a little silly with some really interesting special effects.  It’s one I enjoyed enough to watch again but I recommend tempering your expectations.

Scoring: 3

Decorating Disney: Halloween Magic (2021)

Rated: PG

Genre: Documentary

Synopsis: A spooky behind-the-scenes look at how Halloween is spread through the parks.

Review: I found it interesting some of the details of how they make things, like the huge gingerbread house that goes in the Haunted Mansion ride. If you like the parks and/or decorating for Halloween, you’ll like this.

Scoring: 3

Descendants (2015)

Rated: G

Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy, Musical

Starring: Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Kathy Najimy, Kristin Chenoweth, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson, Mitchell Hope, and Sarah Jeffery

Synopsis: The teenage son of the king and queen or Auradon, Belle and the Beast, offers the trouble-making children of villains a chance to attend prep school in the kingdom.

Review: Personally, I loved this movie.  I really enjoyed the songs and the choreography.  I liked seeing the fairy tale characters from the villains’ point of view.  Even if they were the children of the villains, which just added another layer of interest.  Perfect family movie.

Scoring: 5

Descendants 2 (2017)

Rated: G

Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy, Musical

Starring: Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson, Mitchell Hope, and Sarah Jeffery

Synopsis: Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay try to adjust to life in Auradon, but Mal becomes overwhelmed with pressure and returns to her roots.

Review: I liked this a little less than the first movie.  Maybe the novelty of the concept added to the enjoyment of the first one.  This also has good music and dancing.  The story is just not quite as good.  It’s still a great movie, just not as great as the original.

Scoring: 3

Descendants 3 (2019)

Rated: G

Genres: Comedy, Family, Fantasy, Musical

Starring: Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson, Mitchell Hope, and Sarah Jeffery

Synopsis: The teenagers of Disney’s most infamous villains return to the Isle of the Lost to recruit a new batch of villainous offspring to join them at Auradon Prep.

Review: This was also a good movie but not nearly as good as the first one.  I enjoyed it but not as much as the original.  I liked seeing how the familiar characters were progressing but it felt like a lot of the same.

Scoring: 3

The Dog Who Saved Halloween (2011)

Rated: PG

Genres: Comedy, Fantasy

Starring: Gary Valentine, Dean Cain, Elisa Donovan, Mayim Bialik, and Joey Lawrence

Synopsis: A talking dog encounters a haunted house, a creepy neighbor and a scary canine.

Review: I am not a fan of talking animal movies. I find they’re often too silly and lack any interesting plot. This movie is no different. If you’re kids like talking animal movies this is for them but probably no one else.

Scoring: 1

Don’t Look Under The Bed (1999)

Rated: TV-PG

Genres: Family, Fantasy, Horror

Starring: Erin Chambers and Ty Hodges

Synopsis: A teen enlists the help of an imaginary friend named Larry Houdini to deal with a prank-playing bogeyman, who’s framing her for his dastardly deeds.

Review: I’m on the fence with this one.  I found it to be weird and awkward to watch.  That being said, it might be fun for kids, if they can follow the story.

Scoring: 2

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Rated: PG-13

Genres: Drama, Fantasy

Starring: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest

Synopsis: A deceased inventor’s creation becomes a celebrity when a cheery suburbanite brings him home.

Review:  I’m not sure why so many lists have this as a Christmas movie. A very small part of it takes place at Christmas.  Being a Tim Burton movie, I think most people either love it or hate it.  I just don’t get it.  What’s the point?  If you’re different you’re special until they get tired of you?  I don’t know.  It’s considered a classic but it’s not for me.

Scoring: 1

The Forest (2016)

Reviewed by: michelle_floflo_1on Instagram

Rating: TV-MA

Genres: Horror, Thriller

Starring: Natalie Dormer, Taylor Kinney

Synopsis: When her twin sister goes missing in Japan, an American named Sara travels to find her. When she arrives in Japan, she finds out that her sister has entered Aokigahara Forest located at the base of Mount Fuji. This forest is where people go to kill themselves. The rumors say that the forest is haunted with the tormented and angry souls of the dead. The number one rule of entering the forest is to stay on the path. With the help of a guide, she enters the forest to find her sister but leaves the path. Can she find her sister as she plunges deeper into the forest?

Review: A dry movie. I expected to me ‘wowed’ because Japanese Horror is usually really good. A little boring but it had its jump moments. Ok for your first horror movie, I will turn this on when I have nothing else to watch.

Scoring: 2

Frankenstein Ruins Halloween (2021)

Rated: G

Genres: Animation, Fantasy

Starring, Johnathon Carley and Paul Castro, Jr.

Synopsis: When Dracula takes a well-deserved Halloween vacation, his buddy Frankenstein is left alone for the weekend. Curious and in search of Halloween adventure, Frankenstein unleashes supernatural powers on the whole galaxy.  It’s up to Zombie Dave to tackle the situation.

Review: Like all other movies from this production company, the video quality is so-so, some of the voices are annoying, but in this case the story is okay.  Not great, but okay.  Young children may enjoy it.

Scoring: 2

Frankenweenie
Rated: PG
Genres: Animation, Comedy, Fantasy
Starring: Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Martin Short
Synopsis: When a boy's beloved dog passes away suddenly, he attempts to bring the animal back to life through a powerful science experiment.
Review:  What else can you say but Tim Burton. Bizarre and really weird. A movie about raising the dead isn’t one I’d recommend for children but for adult Burton fans you may enjoy it. I didn’t care for it.
Scoring: 2

Get Out (2017)

Rated: R

Genres: Horror, Mystery, Thriller

Starring: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, and Bradley Whitford

Synopsis: A young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.

Review: From the beginning it was suspenseful.  The music was brilliantly done and added so much to the movie.  The concept was a little bizarre and at times it lost me but overall, I liked it.  Honestly, I hate scary movies and this was a little too creepy for me so that may have colored my experience.  If you like creepy and scary I say try this one.

Scoring: 3

Ghost Patrol (2016)

Rated: TV-Y

Genres: Animation, Adventure

Synopsis: Gabi and Spence, and the Spooky Dog, are the "Ghost Patrol", Their Towns supernatural pest control, but they have never seen a real ghost. When they get a call to investigate the old Geist Manor, they are about to find the proof they are looking for - and a whole lot more.

Review: This movie is geared for children, probably elementary ages. However, it is still entertaining for adults. This is a good family movie. The dog keeps the movie light and adds humor. The only thing I didn’t like was that Gabi’s hair looks like a helmet. It kept bugging me.

Scoring: 3

The Ghosts of Buxley Hall (1980)

Rated: PG

Genres: Comedy, Fantasy

Starring: Dick O’Neill, Victor French, and Louise Latham

Synopsis: Ghosts and a young cadet try to save a military academy from being closed.

Review: This is definitely a 1980 Disney movie.  Children will probably enjoy it but I was quite bored.  It’s not a bad family film but it’s not exactly exciting, either.

Scoring: 2

Ghostbusters (1984)
Rated: PG
Genres: Action, Comedy, Fantasy
Starring: Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramos, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, and Annie Potts
Synopsis: Three former parapsychology professors set up shop as a unique ghost removal service.
Review:  While the premise is quite unbelievable, the plot is even more so. However, that’s part of the fun. The silliness and plot twists keep you thoroughly entertained. If you can handle corny, this is for you.
Scoring: 3

Ghostbusters (2016)

Genres: Comedy, Fantasy

Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Chris Hemsworth

Synopsis: Following a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.

Review: If you’re a fan of the silliness of Saturday Night Live, this is probably for you. Like SNL, where these stars began, the humor reaches for the lowest common denominator and missed the mark. At the core it had a great movie, but the antics took away from it for me.

Ghostbusters II (1989)

Genres: Action, Comedy, Fantasy

Starring: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Annie Potts

Synopsis: The discovery of a massive river of ectoplasm and a resurgence of spectral activity allows the staff of Ghostbusters to revive the business.

Review: I personally enjoyed the original more. I think it’s because I didn’t know what to expect. For this sequel you do. It’s got the same feeling of serious yet silly that the first movie did. It’s just as entertaining and as much fun.

Scoring: 3

Review:  This movie may appeal to school age children but it was a little too expected and silly for me. I didn’t mind watching it but I won’t watch it again. That being said, kids may enjoy it.

Review:  This is the movie that started the Good Witch movies and then TV series. Cassie’s odd ways and mysterious home and shop intrigue the town and, of course, love ensues.
Scoring: 3

Good Witch Halloween

Rated: G

Genres: Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

Starring: Catherine Bell, Bailee Madison, and James Denton

Synopsis: Whilst Cassie deals with the newest guest at Grey House, Grace seeks no advice to help deal with school bullies calling her a witch.

Review:  I enjoyed this as much as all the other Good Witch stories.  It’s got the usual town hijinks mixed with fun and drama.  As with the others, it’s easier to follow if you watch the series.  If you don’t, this might make you want to.

Scoring: 3

Good Witch: Secrets of Grey House

But it's Cassie who ends up doing the uniting, bringing together the people of Middleton to put on the special event while also coming to a special realization about Sam.

Review:  Another wonderful Good Witch story.  It blends just the right amount of mystery with romance.  It’s light and easy.  It may be difficult to follow if you don’t watch the series and aren’t familiar with the story.  If you watch the series, you know you’ll love it.

Scoring: 3

Good Witch: Spellbound

Synopsis: The business owners compete for the best-decorated shop. A prophecy is unearthed in the basement of City Hall; when predictions start coming true, the citizens fear it's a terrible curse. Cassie and Sam may be the key to saving their town.

Review:  I believe this may be one of my favorite Good Witch adventures.  The twists and turns and townspeople reactions to the predictions makes it extra entertaining.  As with the other Good Witch stories, it will be easier to follow and enjoy if you watch the series.

Scoring: 4

Good Witch: Tale Of Two Hearts

Starring: Catherine Bell, James Denton, and Bailee Madison
Synopsis: Everyone in town prepares for the Halloween Harvest Festival’s competition with rival town Blairsville. When a 100-carat ruby known as The Heart of Middleton is stolen from the museum where the festival’s gala is to be held, the town’s Halloween romance suffers, and Cassie suspects a Grey House guest is the culprit.
Review:  If you’re a fan of the Good Witch series this is a must see movie as it’s a continuation of the show’s story line. If you don’t watch the series you may have trouble figuring out the characters and relationships. That being said, it’s as charming as the series with the expected Halloween magic.
Scoring: 4

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2018)

Rated: PG

Genres: Adventure, Drama, Family, Fantasy

Starring: Wendi McLendon-Covey, Madison Iseman, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Caleel Harris, Jack Black, Chris Parnell, and Ken Jeong

Synopsis: Two young friends find a magic book that brings a ventriloquist's dummy to life.

Review: This is the first Goosebumps anything I’ve seen. I’ve never even read a book. I found it a little silly but I wasn’t bored. Even at points where it was starting to feel monotonous. It’s a good family film. My only warning is if your child is easily scared, this may be too much for them.
